Opened in 1987, Skadden’s Tokyo office was the firm’s first international office. We operate as a gaikokuho kyodo jigyo (foreign law joint enterprise) with bengoshi who are licensed to practice law and appear in Japanese courts, advising on a wide range of matters involving domestic and international clients.

Our Tokyo office has extensive experience representing a broad spectrum of Japanese, U.S., European and other international clients in highly diverse and complex cross-border transactions involving global markets. These transactions include mergers, acquisitions and joint ventures; capital markets and structured finance transactions; shareholder activism matters; and real estate-related acquisitions, joint ventures, and debt and equity financings. We also assist clients in restructurings and in the formation of investment funds.

Our Summer Associate Program in Tokyo is geared towards students in three-year J.D. programs in the United States who will be admitted to practice law in the United States. Upon graduation from law school, the goal is to join the firm as an associate in Tokyo.

Summer associates work with the firm for 11 weeks and are assigned a mentor. All summer associates are assigned to active matters and participate in our training programs.

In addition to gaining work experience, our summer associates participate in a wide range of social activities, which allow them to experience the unique cultural, historical and social setting of our Asia offices and better get to know each other and our attorneys. These events are coupled with informal lunches, dinners and cocktail outings with our attorneys.
