Bio

Liz Coffin-Karlin represents clients around the world in international arbitration, litigation and regulatory matters, including with regard to complex commercial disputes arising out of international business transactions and governmental investigations.

Ms. Coffin-Karlin has appeared before the American Arbitration Association (AAA)/International Center for Dispute Resolution (ICDR) and the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA). She has also advised on disputes in state and federal courts, including the New York Commercial Division, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York and U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

Ms. Coffin-Karlin’s experience prior to and since joining Skadden includes representing:

  • a Brazilian aircraft manufacturer in a dispute against a U.S. aircraft manufacturer involving the termination of a multibillion-dollar merger agreement and a large joint venture agreement
  • a Brazilian energy company in a dispute with a European joint venture partner arising from implications of the Brazilian Lava Jato investigation
  • financial institutions in connection with claims under the Helms-Burton Act (a statute that allows U.S. nationals to sue those “trafficking” in assets expropriated by the Cuban government following the 1959 revolution)
  • a Luxembourg bank in seeking the dismissal of a fraud case by the New York Commercial Division in which the opposing party had requested a stay of ongoing proceedings in Europe in order to pursue litigation in New York
  • an international consulting firm in conducting an internal investigation into claims of discrimination in its international offices
  • a sovereign wealth fund in its response to international and U.S. regulatory investigations related to allegations of corruption regarding an investment in a large infrastructure project

Ms. Coffin-Karlin also has an active pro bono practice in which she represents parties in complex immigration cases in immigration court, at the Board of Immigration Appeals and at the federal appellate level. She was also part of a Skadden team that was recognized as an American Gateways Pro Bono Champion for its work representing a family in immigration-related proceedings.

Prior to starting her legal career, Ms. Coffin-Karlin was a Teach for America Corps Member at Castlemont Senior High School in Oakland, California.
