Bio
Khaled Abbas’ practice focuses on representing clients in complex civil matters, including business disputes, securities litigation and class action cases. He has represented corporations and their officers and directors across a variety of industries, including technology, biotechnology, consumer goods and energy.
Representative matters include:
- a public beauty and wellness company in an ongoing SEC investigation involving revenue recognition and other accounting issues
- Estée Lauder and a number of its subsidiary companies in obtaining the rapid dismissal of national and California class actions alleging violations of California consumer protection laws arising from marketing and packaging statements regarding the efficacy of certain cosmetics products
- Hyundai Motor Company, Kia Motors Corporation, Hyundai Motor America, Inc. and Kia Motors America, Inc. in securing the dismissal of a multidistrict litigation centralized in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California in connection with defective airbag control units supplied by ZF-TRW. The allegations included violations of RICO, state consumer protection statutes, fraud, unjust enrichment and breach of warranty
- FirstEnergy Corp. in securing the Ohio Sixth District Court of Appeals’ affirmance of the denial of class certification and reversal of subclass certification in a case alleging breach of contract and fraudulent misrepresentation
- ExxonMobil Oil Corporation in a Texas state action and related arbitration regarding a dispute over the nine-figure acquisition of 64 Exxon and Mobil-branded gas retail stations in Texas from franchisees Landmark Industries Energy, LLC and Landmark Industries, LLC
- Newport Fab, LLC d/b/a Jazz Semiconductor (Jazz), a semiconductor manufacturing facility and one of the largest employers in Newport Beach, California, against claims brought by its industrial landlord and real estate developer Uptown Newport Jamboree, LLC
- Ran Poliakine, chairman of Nano-X Imaging Ltd., in securing the dismissal of an employment agreement dispute involving allegations by a former employee that they were entitled to a multimillion-dollar employee stock award
- multiple high-profile defendants in various prosecutions by the SEC and the DOJ
- corporations in connection with preemptive internal investigations and investigations by governmental agencies
Mr. Abbas maintains an active pro bono practice and has represented:
- multiple asylum seekers fleeing persecution in their country of origin
- a youth shelter pro bono organization in responding to subpoenas seeking medical records of housed youth
- a nonprofit organization in obtaining documents related to a public records request against the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department
