Congressional Investigations
Skadden provides clients a unique combination of substantive legal skills, attention to reputational and business concerns, and an ability to recognize and seamlessly address potential implications of related civil or government enforcement actions. Prior to joining Skadden, many of our attorneys served at the highest levels of the federal government, including at the White House, on Capitol Hill, in the Justice Department, and at federal agencies such as the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Internal Revenue Service, the Department of the Treasury, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, the Food and Drug Administration and numerous other departments and agencies that influence businesses in the global marketplace.
Our group has represented numerous companies, executives and public officials in high-profile congressional investigations, including preparing witnesses to testify before congressional committees, responding to document and information requests, and counseling clients in connection with written reports issued by congressional investigators. These include inquiries conducted by the House Energy and Commerce Committee; House Financial Services Committee; House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform; Senate Select Committee on Intelligence; Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions; Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations; Senate Special Committee on Aging; Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee; Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation; Senate Finance Committee; and Senate Banking Committee. Our group also has handled various inquiries posed by individual members of Congress and select congressional committees.
Our attorneys have an intimate knowledge of congressional processes, as well as experience working with congressional staff to potentially narrow the scope of a government probe. We have extensive experience in parallel government enforcement examinations and grand jury and civil proceedings. In cases where a congressional inquiry may spark other scrutiny, our team has a deep background in handling a broad range of government, internal and white collar investigations; enforcement actions; and litigation.
